National Voting Rights Institute

VOTER WORK

NVRI engages in extensive public education and outreach efforts across the United States. Through this work we seek to increase public understanding of the excessive and corrupting influence of private money in our political system and of the inherent inequality resulting from a system dominated by wealth. We aim to redefine campaign finance as a civil rights/voting rights issue.

DESCRIPTION

National Voting Rights Institute is a prominent non-partisan legal center in the campaign finance reform field.

Mission: Protecting the constitutional right of all citizens to participate in the entire election process regardless of economic status (It appears that they do this through litigation more than education or mobilizing citizens)

-A legal complaint was filed in mid-June in Washington, D.C. with the Federal Election Commission against the Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD), attempting to block their sponsorship, with corporate backing, of the 2004 presidential debates. Four alternative parties, the Green Party, Natural Law Party, Constitution Party and Reform Party, are the plaintiffs in this legal action. The FEC complaint ""alleges that the CPD's partisan conduct violates election laws requiring that debate-staging organizations be non-partisan, and that CPD's use of corporate funding. . . violates a federal ban on corporate campaign contributions.""
