Arizona's online voter registration breaks new record

The Daily Dispatch
September 2006

PHOENIX (AP) _ The Arizona Secretary of State's Office has reported one-day and single-month primary election voter registration records.

On Monday, the last day to register for the Sept. 12 primary, 6,491 people registered using the state's EZVoter system, said Kevin Tyne, a secretary of state spokesman.

The previous single-day record for registrations for a primary was 4,800.

Arizona also saw big strides in registrations in July, when 31,837 people registered through the Internet. That's compared with the previous record of 6,535 in January 2003, the Secretary of State's Office reported.

Arizona is the only state with an online system that specifically allows citizens to register to vote over the Internet. And they do so with the EZVoter system, an Internet-based service offered by the state and Service Arizona, a Web site where motorists can renew their driver's licenses and vehicle registrations.

State officials believe that more than half of all people who registered to vote in Arizona so far this year have done so with the EZVoter system, Tyne said.

Overall, there were about 1.49 million registered voters in Maricopa County as of Monday. Republicans accounted for 632,848 registrations as of Aug. 10, the most updated figure available. Democrats followed at 439,150, and Independents at 385,778.

There were 9,769 Libertarians registered.

The general election is Nov. 7.
